Barbara (Floyd) Eubanks


DURHAM [NC] - Barbara Jean Floyd Eubanks of Tate, Georgia died May 17, 2004 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Mrs. Eubanks had been receiving treatment in Durham for three months. Mrs. Eubanks was born in Marietta, Mississippi, on March 6, 1943, the daughter of the late George Walter and Ruth Bolton Floyd. After graduating from Marietta High School, Marietta , Mississippi, in 1961, Miss Floyd earned a teaching degree from Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. Following two years of teaching first grade in Long Beach, Mississippi, she moved to Marietta, Georgia, where she enjoyed a very successful teaching career in the Cobb County school system at Bells Ferry Elementary School. She taught first and second grades for 30 years. As a Teacher of the Year and an outstanding member of the faculty, Barbara is fondly remembered by former students, parents, and peers for her excellent teaching skills and life lessons. She was an active member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, a Society of Women in Education, served as an officer of the Cobb Professional Educators, and an active participant in the Pickens County Retired Educators Association.


Married to James Thomas Eubanks Jr. in 1983, Barbara and Tom in 1986 began the restoration and enlargement of the old Cagle House in south Pickens County. The Cagle House, built in 1871 by Tom’s Great Grandfather , was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 2002. Barbara was hostess of the Cagle House and over the years has welcomed guests from all over the United States.


As very active members of the Big Canoe Chapter of Friendship Force International, Mr. & Mrs. Eubanks were the hosts of more than 20 groups of Friend Force visitors from 15 countries from around the world. In 1994 the Eubanks were exchange directors for a unique FFI architectural exchange visit to St. Petersburg, Russia, and Helsinki, Finland. In St. Petersburg the Chief Architect of the Hermitage Museum was their host.


Since retirement Mrs. Eubanks has continued her community involvement by volunteering at the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center in Jasper, Georgia. She also continued to share her extensive teaching skills by serving as an interim teacher in Cherokee and Pickens Counties. Mrs. Eubanks loved teaching, traveling, family, church and community activities.
Barbara became a member of Zion Rest Church of Christ, Marietta, Mississippi, as a teenager. Moving to Marietta, Georgia, she became a member of the Olive Street Church of Christ. Since coming to Pickens County, Barbara and Tom became active members of the Non Denominational Chapel at Big Canoe.


Barbara is survived by her husband Tom Eubanks, five sisters, and two brothers-in-law; Bobbie Huddleston, Evelyn Floyd, Martha Tyra, of Booneville Mississippi; Sarah and O’Neil Parker of Memphis, Tennessee; and Elizabeth and Charles Chisholm of Canton, Mississippi and one sister-in-law, Pam Floyd of Booneville. In the Eubanks family she is survived by five sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law: Grady and Theresa Ireland and Ron and Brenda Eubanks of Marietta, Georgia, Ron and Sharyn Bernecky of Smyrna, Georgia, Mark and Sue Eubanks and Melvin and Betty McGill of Rome, Georgia. She is survived by 8 nieces, 6 nephews, 10 great nieces, 11 great nephews, 1 great- great- niece in the Floyd family and 5 nieces, 4 nephews, 6 great nieces, and 4 great nephews in the Eubanks family. Mrs. Eubanks was preceded in death by her sister Mary Floyd, and two brothers Harrrell and Kenneth Floyd. 


The family will receive visitors from 4:00 to 9:00 PM Wednesday evening at Cagles Funeral Home in Jasper, Georgia. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, May 20, 2004 in The Big Canoe Chapel, Big Canoe, Georgia followed by a luncheon in celebration of Barbara’s life in the adjacent Broyles Center. A graveside service and interment will be at 4:00 P.M. in the Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Tate, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Barbara Jean Floyd Eubanks Teaching Foundation Fund in care of the Jasper Banking Company, 100 Mark Whitfield Street, Jasper, Georgia 30143.
